If you are thinking about moving to Australia for work, GIEC Global Lucknow is your reliable partner. With years of experience and a strong success record, GIEC Global helps skilled professionals apply for Australian work visas with confidence. One of the most common visas for skilled workers is the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) 482 visa. To apply for this visa, you need to meet the English language requirement.
We guide you through the English test process and help you to understand what score is needed based on your occupation and visa stream. Here is a detailed 482 visa English language requirement and see how GIEC Global Lucknow can support you..
The English language rules for the TSS medium-term visa are straightforward:
You’ll need to show you have an IELTS score of 5 overall, with no less than 5 in each section (reading, writing, listening, and speaking). If you take a different approved English test, you’ll need an equivalent score.
The good news is that the rules for which tests are accepted, how recently you needed to take the test, and who doesn’t need to take a test at all are exactly the same as they were for the old TSS visa. So, if you were familiar with the previous requirements, nothing has changed there!
The Short Term Stream is for applicants whose occupation is on the STSOL list (Short-term Skilled Occupation List). You must show “functional” English, which means you can manage basic communication in work and daily life.

If your occupation is on the Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL), then you will need to prove “vocational” English, which is a slightly higher level.

You might not need an English language test for your TSS 482 visa application if any of these apply to you:
Your English-Taught Education: You’ve completed at least five years of full time study (at either high school or university level) where English was the main language of instruction. You’ll need to provide evidence of this.
High-Income Overseas Transfer: You are an employee of an overseas business that has nominated you to work in Australia, and your guaranteed annual earnings will be at least AUD$96,400
Short-Term Stream (STSOL)
Medium-Term Stream (MLTSSL)
For the TSS 482 visa, your English language necessary depends on your job’s list:
STSOL (Short-Term Skilled Occupation List): This list normally want Functional English, which means a lower score on approved English tests.
MLTSSL (Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List): This list requires Vocational English, which means a higher score on approved English tests.
GIEC Global helps you understand the specific English test score needed for your particular job and guides you in choosing the right test (like IELTS, PTE, or TOEFL)
No, not always. There are certain situations where you might be exempt from taking an English language test.
Yes, if your nominated occupation need an Australian license, registration, or membership, and they have higher English proficiency requirements than the 482 visa itself, you must meet those higher requirements.
Usually, secondary applicants (like your partner and dependent children) are not required to show evidence of English proficiency. However, all family members must meet health and character requirements.
If you’re claiming an exemption based on education, you’ll need to provide transcripts, details of the institutions, and proof that the instruction was primarily in English. For salary exemptions, you’ll need evidence of your guaranteed annual earnings.
