Age: Generally, you must be under 45 years old when you are invited to apply.

Occupation: Your nominated occupation must be listed on Australia’s Skilled Occupation List (SOL). These lists include the:

• Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL)  
• Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL)  
• Regional Occupation List (ROL)  

Skills Assessment: You need to have your skills assessed by a relevant Australian assessing authority to ensure they meet Australian standards for your nominated occupation. 

English Language Skills: You’ll need to take an English test, like IELTS, PTE, TOEFL, or OET, to show you understand and speak English well. Getting a better score can give you more points for your visa application.. Here’s an example:

• Competent: IELTS 6 in each band (0 points)
• Proficient: IELTS 7 in each band (10 points)  
• Superior: IELTS 8 in each band (20 points)  

Points Test: Australia uses a points system to see if you can apply. You need to get at least 65 points. You earn these points based on things like:

• Age: (e.g., 25-32 years = 30 points)  
• English Proficiency: (up to 20 points)
• Work Experience: (Outside Australia: up to 15 points; In Australia: up to 20 points)
• Qualifications: (e.g., Doctorate = 20 points, Bachelor’s = 15 points)  
• Other factors: including Australian study, study in a regional area, community language skills, partner’s skills, and state/territory nomination.  

Health and Character: You also need to be healthy and have no criminal record. This usually means doing a medical check-up and giving police certificates from any country where you lived for a year or more in the last ten years.

Step-by-Step Application Process:

1. Check Your Eligibility: Check that you meet the basic rules for age, type of job, and English ability. You can use a points calculator online to see your score.
2. Skills Assessment: You’ll need to get your skills checked by an Australian organization that deals with your job type. This usually means showing them your qualifications and what work you’ve done.
3. English Proficiency Test: Take an approved English test and get the needed score.
4. Expression of Interest (EOI): Next, you need to submit an “Expression of Interest” (EOI) online through SkillSelect. Here, you will provide information about your skills, education, and work experience.. You also say which type of permanent visa you want (like Subclass 189, 190, or 491). They will then compare your application with others based on the points you’ve earned.
5. Invitation to Apply (ITA): If they like your Expression of Interest, you’ll get an invite to formally apply for the visa you chose.
6. Visa Application: After you get an ITA, you must submit your full visa application within 60 days. This means sending all the needed documents, such as:
   

• Passport and identity documents
• Skills assessment report
• English language test results
• Work experience evidence (reference letters, payslips)  
• Educational qualifications (transcripts, certificates)  
• Health examination results
• Police clearance certificates
• Marriage or birth certificates (if applicable for family members)

Visa Grant: If your application is accepted, you will receive a permanent residency visa.

Common Permanent Residency Visa Subclasses:

• Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189): This is for skilled workers who aren’t sponsored by an employer, family, or a state/territory. You need to get an invitation after submitting your EOI.
•  19Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass0): For skilled workers nominated by an Australian state or territory government. Nomination provides additional points. Requires an invitation after lodging an EOI. You must commit to living and working in the nominating state or territory for a certain period.
• Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (Subclass 491): This visa helps skilled workers move to a specific area in Australia if a local government asks them or if a family member there helps them. It starts as a temporary visa, but you can become a permanent resident if you meet some requirements later on.. You need to be invited to apply after you’ve shown your interest (EOI).

Important Considerations:

• The number of points you need to get invited can change. It depends on your job, how many other people are applying, and what the government rules are at the time. 65 points is the lowest you can have, but if you have more points, you have a better chance of getting an invitation.
